What You Should Know

The scam begins with a tempting offer to quickly and easily repair and improve your credit for a fee. Quick to ask for immediate payment prior to providing services, scammers make a point of mentioning all the great "things" you can buy with better credit (think of a new car, house or vacation). They will also promise a specific increase in your credit score or even guarantee the removal of negative credit information in your credit report.

Companies promising a "new credit identity" say they can help you hide bad credit history or bankruptcy for a fee. If you pay them, these companies will provide you with a nine-digit number that looks like a Social Security number. But BEWARE; this process is a scam and it's illegal! It's quite likely that they are selling stolen Social Security numbers, often those taken from children. By using a stolen number as your own, the con artists will have involved you in identity theft. Based on data and customer feedback, this scam is becoming more and more prevalent.
