What you should know
The newest phone scam to hit consumers is an effective, yet simple call involving the caller asking, “Can you hear me?” The logical response is to say, “Yes.” Unfortunately, that’s exactly the problem. Scammers are using robots to call and secretly record you. The answers you give them are then used against you – and your wallet. Caller: “Hi, this is Frank from the consumer department – can you hear me okay?” If you answer “Yes,” it’s secretly recorded. Later, the scammer calls back demanding payment, using the recording as proof that you agreed to pay for goods or services.
This new scam can also use robocallers equipped with artificially intelligent voice recognition to engage in a conversation and capture your personal information.

And just in case you do “press 1”, do not give out any information or provide any upfront payment. Be sure to report them to the Federal Trade Commission and Better Business Bureau.
